Altered Tape Gun – Steampunkish look

Wow, I didn’t realize how badly I’d neglected my blog. Something I intend to remedy with at least a weekly journey into creative chaos. What’s brought me back? Well, aside from my utter enjoyment with Pinterest (aka digital hoarding) ideas, I woke up yesterday with a burst of creativity.

It started with making cards for all of my daughter’s pre-k classmates for their first day of school. I’d already taken a digi stamp of the quintessential “little red school house” from Club Scrap’s Scholarship kit, printed it, hand colored the 20 cards using a watercolor brush and Tim Holtz’ Distress Marker technique. I’d cut the card bases, and was using my ATG to affix them.

Then I realized I was done, over, and just sick of the pink ATG gun. I’d gotten it almost two years ago on sale, and pink has never been my thing. As I was emptying out the spool of adhesive on these cards, I remembered I had a little bit of Rustoleum Hammered metal-look paint left from making over file cabinets. In copper, and rosemary. (See where I’m going with this yet?)

So, with masking tape, a screwdriver, and five minutes – I quickly had the gears off the gun.  The gun got a coat of Rosemary, the gears, copper.

Once the paint dried (and really, this was one of the longest parts) I pulled off the masking tape and the result was nice, but not quite what I wanted yet.

I decided to cover the labels, both sides.  With a little Ranger alcohol ink (pesto, lettuce and snow cap mixative one one side, rust and terra cotta on the other) and ranger foil, I cut a new label for each side.

Still not quite there yet.  Ah ha moment.  Old watch parts I got off ebay ages ago, E6000, and sealed with Ranger crackle accents.  Now I have my one-of-a-kind, not pink, ATG steam punk tape gun.  Pretty sure I may try this again (I still have a little green paint left) on my hot glue and heat guns.
